With more than 15 years of landscaping and construction experience in England, Australia and New Zealand, Carl Gildea specialises in designing stylish, unique gardens for homeowners to enjoy.
It all began on a working holiday in Australia where he enjoyed the creative and satisfying work of laying paving and building retaining walls.
When he arrived in New Zealand, Carl established his own company Willow Landscapes, covering all aspects of landscape design and construction from decking and retaining walls, to driveways, lawns and creating completely new gardens.
“I’m told I have a very good eye for detail and symmetry. That’s why I love paving, but because one of my hobbies is building timber furniture, I am also passionate about using timber in gardens to fashion pergolas, screens, fencing and decking.”
Carl’s pavement designs are bespoke and beautiful, ranging from perfect straight lines, to sweeping koru-shaped patterns.
All paving, patio builds and other concrete works are completed to professional top-quality standards by masonry craftsmen.
Decks, pergolas, raised garden beds and fencing are all simple, yet stylish ways Carl and the team can transform bare landscapes into modern, appealing spaces to entertain, relax and enjoy.
He also has a deep appreciation for New Zealand’s flora and fauna and is passionate about introducing natives into all the gardens he designs and constructs.

Carl Gildea is passionate about creating beautiful outdoor spaces. He’s a perfectionist who after 15 years travelling the world and improving landscapes along the way, finally put down roots in the Garden City. What did he want to do here? He wanted to establish his own company and build gardens that will stand long and strong as peaceful oases for people to enjoy and cherish. And that is just what he has done.
Symbolically Carl named his company Willow Landscapes after the strong, hardy, graceful and instantly recognisable tree. “Every deck, retaining wall, pathway, lawn and garden we design and create is constructed to last, just like our namesake.”
Carl‘s love of all things landscaping began on a working holiday in Australia where he thoroughly enjoyed laying paving and building retaining walls. “It was hard work, but I could be creative and it was very satisfying seeing the final outcome. Once I returned to the UK I knew this was the work I wanted to do and anyone who visits Westminster walks on paving I laid. Now I’m continuing that tradition here in NZ.”
Carl knows that preparation is the cornerstone for a garden. “My team and I put a lot of work into the foundations of everything we do. It’s what’s below the surface that makes the biggest impact. Even our mighty willow is only as good as its root system. We consider every element necessary to fulfil a client’s requirements – design vision, materials, environment and budget – to create a holistic outdoor area. Not only that but we really take great pleasure in every job. It’s wonderful to be outdoors and working hard.”
There is tremendous versatility to the Willow Landscapes’ portfolio. They can tackle everything from hard landscaping through to the softening final touches of planting. “Gardens come to life with plants. Since being in New Zealand I’ve developed a deep appreciation for this country’s native plants and I love to include them in the gardens we construct.”

Even on a gloomy, drizzly winter’s day, the view from Carl Gildea’s workplace is spectacular. Carl and his Willow Landscapes team are high on the hills above Halswell laying out a New Zealand-themed garden complete with a koru-shaped feature pathway and rocks of every shape and size.
“We were given a basic concept plan drawn up some time ago by a landscape architect,” Carl says. “And we’ve refined it and developed it into a working design. Our job has been the hard landscaping – the paths, the paving, the koru and rock features and the stone chip tracks, as well as installing an irrigation system for the native plants that the homeowner has selected.”
The rocks for the garden came courtesy of the neighbouring farmer. “He told us to just help ourselves from his rock pile. That was a bit easier said than done. Getting the big ones down to the garden itself was something of a challenge!”
But for Carl, challenges and turning complex design ideas into reality are what make his job as a landscaper so interesting. Willow Landscapes has quickly become known for being able to handle all aspects of landscape design and construction, from paving, decking, fencing and building block or wooden retaining walls to laying new lawns and replanting garden beds.
“We really enjoy the variety of work we do and the different locations we get to go to – everything from private homes to schools and churches.”
