Seeing the city sights: Caroline’s Kombi Tours

They say good things come in small packages, which rings true for our beautiful city and is also one of the reasons why Caroline’s Kombi Tours are so popular.

Providing a unique and fun way to explore Christchurch, one of the wonderful things about a Kombi Van is its small size, which is a great way of bringing people together. “When filled with people it brings a real closeness,” says Caroline, who runs the business with her husband Murray. “Our tours are about learning new things and having fun but it’s also about people connecting and getting to know each other.”

For business owners looking for an enjoyable team building idea – come on board for a tailored Caroline’s Kombi experience! With many small businesses doing big things, the tours also provide a fantastic way to showcase and support local businesses. From tasting the amazing Bennetto Organic Fairtrade Chocolate to drinking a shot of Number 8 from the new business Ball & Cue, our city is full of small businesses providing the best in food and beverage.

Visiting the Christchurch farmers’ markets is something everyone should experience and it’s also exciting to see Riverside Farmers Market will be open in a few months, on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Cashel Street. The market will be full of local growers and small businesses – an amazing addition to the central city.

Another small and beautiful place to be proud of is our world-class facility for the music and arts of Canterbury, The Piano. The architectural design is inspired by a grand piano and the name of the building in Māori is small bird – the Pipiwharauroa. The shining cuckoo are the conveyors of messages of singers and entertainers; and are also of significance for the Ngāi Tūāhuriri.

The Lonely Planet has ranked Christchurch as a global street art capital – for a small city we are BIG on art. With Caroline’s Art Tours, you will see the best of the city’s street art, as well as other amazing outdoor sculptures. Caroline’s Kombi specialises in small groups and the company focuses on providing a fun-filled experience, sharing wonderful stories and fun facts, along with their extensive local knowledge.

“We enjoy meeting new people and would love to take your family, friends, employees, visitors or grandparents on a journey to showcase the arts, but of course we also have other tours available. We take great pride in providing our customers the best possible experience – we would love to hear from you.”

Some of the fantastic feedback from one of the company’s many happy customers: “Highly recommend. Was thoroughly enjoyable and something a little different and a uniquely NZ experience A++++.”

Creating Memories: Caroline’s Kombi tours

Summer holidays are all about creating memories with friends and family, so bring your visitors aboard Caroline’s Kombi for an experience they will never forget.

Sit back, relax and explore Christchurch, say Caroline and Murray of Caroline’s Kombi tours, who would like to wish everyone a happy New Year Tau Hou Hari. “To see our city continuing to grow makes us feel proud to be Cantabrians. There are new things opening all the time and many visitors, particularly the older generations, would enjoy a city tour to see what’s happening.”

One of Christchurch’s many attractions is the amazing, world-renowned street art – from sculptures by famous artists, to the woven maps of welcome – Ngā Whāriki Manaaki – and the street lamps in the solidarity grid, as well as the art galleries promoting local artists including Canterbury Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, Toi Moroki CoCA, The Central Art Gallery, PG Gallery 192, and many more. “With the regeneration of the city, the arts have been very much involved in the healing and given positive strength to rebuild to our city again.”

One of the most prestigious examples of street art is of the late Parihaka elder, Whero O Te Tangi Bailey, known to many as Poppy. This amazing woman has been painted on the side of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Christchurch. The mural is painted by Canadian street artist Kevin Ledo and based on a photo taken by New Zealand photographer Stu Robertson, as part of his Peace in 10,000 Hands project to renew the conversation for peace.

Art is a huge part of our culture without us being aware of it, Caroline says. “I read a lovely quote from a woman that I wanted to share, who said that art is important as a way of exploring and understanding the world around us. She said, ‘we are not art experts but whether it’s creating our own art, visiting museums and galleries or finding beauty in the world around us, I value these special moments as a family’.”

Along with Super Senior tours and Food tours, tailored tours for special events or corporate outings are also available. Caroline and Murray provide a fun-filled experience, sharing wonderful stories and fun facts, along with their extensive local knowledge. “We enjoy meeting new people and would love to take your family, visitors or grandparents on a journey to showcase the arts, but of course we also have other tours available. We take great pride in providing our customers the best possible experience.”

Hitting the town: Caroline’s Kombi tours

Reminiscing after a trip to America, Caroline and Murray Ireland realised one of the most enjoyable aspects of their holidays abroad was meeting the locals, who provided a more personable city tour. “They were run by friendly, engaging personalities, who made it really fun and memorable – so we decided we could do the same here in Christchurch,” says Caroline.

The well-travelled Cantabrian couple established Caroline’s Kombi tours, providing a unique way for visitors to explore Christchurch, while showcasing and supporting local businesses. “There is so much to offer in the city now and many exciting opportunities to come with the rebuild – we’re not focusing on the earthquakes. It’s also a chance to include Christchurch’s heritage, combined with quirky history facts, Kiwi culture, and a lot of fun.”

Murray is the tour guide, while Caroline drives the cute mint-and-white Kombi vans, Judy and Moira – which seat six people each, for an even more personable tour. “The vans are named after my mother and aunt, who both had a great passion for life,” Caroline says. “And the iconic Kombi van represents adventure and brings back many happy summer holiday memories for us – people connect with them worldwide.”

“The iconic Kombi van represents adventure.”

The vans have been meticulously worked on by local VW specialists, Mark and Tony from The Metric Nut, to ensure they are of the highest standard for comfort, quality and safety. Caroline’s Kombi tours include the CBD Tour, featuring a must-see list of attractions such as the Christchurch Art Gallery, Kate Sheppard Memorial, Rutherford’s Den, Scape Public Art, Solidarity Grid, Bridge of Remembrance and the Cardboard Cathedral, as well as showcasing the city’s renowned street art, before heading to Cashmere hills for stunning views of the Southern Alps. During the summer, the guided tours will extend to Governors Bay to visit the garden of international significance, Ohinetahi, as well as other sights outside the CBD.

Food tours, Super Senior tours and tailored tours for special events or corporate outings are also available – whether groups of friends or colleagues want to visit Diamond Harbour, Sumner Beach, or Lyttleton. Business partnering with ChristchurchNZ, the company fully supports #explorechristchurch, encouraging fellow Cantabrians back into the city centre. “The tours are also a great way for local families who have visitors in town to truly experience their city and have some fun.”

Caroline and Murray provide a fun-filled experience, sharing wonderful stories and fun facts, along with their extensive local knowledge. “We love new experiences and meeting new people, both locals and people from all over the world.
