Marvellous Meatballs: Balls & All

It seems like an impossibly glamorous occupation, to travel the world playing polo, so why did Alex Rowland-Jones and George Cooper-Dixon give it all up to sell meatballs? After years on the road, tired of living out of suitcases, the call of home was too strong to resist and they decided to come back to New Zealand to put down some roots.

Inspired by one of their mum’s favourite homemade recipes, they had been talking together for years about setting up their own food business. After fine tuning their own special meatball recipe to perfection, ‘Balls & All’ at the Colombo was launched and is now open to delight your taste buds!

Their delicious meatballs are rolled fresh everyday onsite and made from only the best quality locally sourced ingredients. For the very reasonable price of $13.50 you get three mouth-watering meatballs served on top of your choice of base; mashed potatoes, fettucine pasta, or cannelloni beans. The dish is topped off with a splash of their very own homemade meatball sauce (sorry we can’t tell you the recipe – it’s top secret) and a sprinkle of herbs cut fresh from mum’s herb garden. It doesn’t get fresher than that!

To get your meatball fix, roll in to see them at 363 Colombo Street, Christchurch. To find out more check out their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ballsandallnz/ or phone Alex on 027 727 3542.

Sweet Société

Heaven on earth: Sweet Société

A vision of heaven is a deeply personal thing, but the odds are that every vision of paradise contains a little corner like Sweet Société. Located in The Colombo, Sweet Société is now under new ownership. Locals whisper it’s a delightful dreamland of fresh and wholesome treats.

Sweet Société

This magical spot uplifts the senses with the elegant colours and sensational smells of fresh locally baked sourdough donuts creamed every day in flavours of banoffee pie, Snickers bar, and strawberry and cream, with new flavours added regularly. The cabinet holds an extensive range of gluten-free options, including New York Cheesecake, Chocolate Caramel lamington cake, freshly baked slices, plus the full range of macrons supplied by J’aime Les Macarons. While Sweet Société takes pride in its deliciously baked fresh goods, it also stocks an expanded range of Harney & Sons teas and frappes to satisfy your thirst.

Only the Rainbow range of gelato is non-local: imported from Italy, they are gluten-free with a range of flavours. Dairy-free sorbets are also available. The bliss is completed with the match made in heaven – the gelato donut! Owner Janette says they love sharing the joy around The Colombo. “Our shop is about providing unique, fresh and inspiring quality products, whether you’re buying for joy, to cheer a friend, celebrate an occasion or a work shout.”

All products can be supplied to order, with diverse options for bulk orders and, as the staff have sampled everything, you can be sure they are experts in making up gift boxes.

Elegance with Edge: Repertoire

With its first store opening in 2006, Repertoire has now grown to eight stores throughout New Zealand. In Christchurch, we’re very fortunate to have two boutiques, one in the BNZ Centre and one in The Colombo.

 Repertoire

Co-owner, Meghan Maher, says its business concept, right from the beginning, has been to ensure its stores are customer service driven.
“Customers are warmly welcomed by our trained stylists. Our staff are real women who really care. There’s so much love in our stores!”
Meghan expands on the point of difference in the brand. “We offer complimentary sessions in which a woman is given head-to-toe styling in a safe and cocooned environment; it’s a tranquil space in which they can try on as many garments as needed to find the look that’s perfect for them.”

 Repertoire

Repertoire releases two New Zealand made collections in-store and online every month. “Every single time a customer visits our store, there will be a new collection on the racks since the last time they visited,” Meghan says. Meghan says the core philosophy is to inspire and support women with clothing that gives the wearer everyday self-confidence. “Our garments are elegantly relaxed but with an edge. When customers walk down the street, heads will turn. Our clothes have the ‘wow’ element!”

 Repertoire

Another key component to its garments is their ability to transcend from daywear into evening wear. “Our dresses, for instance, can be worn with sneakers or flats by day, but add a pair of heels, a pretty purse and earrings, and it suddenly becomes a dress to take to the races, or any ‘after five’ gathering.” Meghan says the clothes are very current and they follow global trends, but not slavishly. “We look at what’s happening overseas, but we consider the New Zealand climate and the New Zealand customer.”

 Repertoire

For those with wanderlust, the capsule range is ideal for travel, as they fold into nothing and are extremely crease-resistant.
Education, communication and connection is hugely important to Repertoire.  “Social media is a fantastic tool in that we can share, update and guide our customers through the whole process of feeling confident about every beautiful, unique garment hanging in their wardrobe,” Meghan says. “We want women to reconnect with their wardrobes.”
