50 shades of silver: V for Hair

When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone, explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.

“Just because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a ‘silver’ colour,” she says.

“We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.”

Vicki says those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, while those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris.

“Getting your colour under tone is so important and when this is done right it instantly brightens, lifts, and can take years off,” Vicki says.

“Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!”

Gold Rush

Gold Rush

Gold is adding its illustrious touch to our homewares this season. This magical metallic in its purest golden form will now out-shine recent trends of copper and bronze.

Gold Rush

Gold pairs beautifully with silver – a perfect balancing act that is easy on the eye. It doesn’t have to be all matching chrome in kitchens or bathrooms. The two opposing metals work really well, as does gold and black. Antiqued-gold and black furniture is now contemporary glamour.

The minimalism trend of Scandinavian style and neutral colour schemes are making way for décor of the dramatic kind. Think large gold-framed prints, glamorous gold mirrors or lamps, and adding gleam from table cloths and trinkets to ottomans and cushions. Gold is a winning combination when paired with the latest jewelled fabrics and interesting textures.

The secret is to sprinkle the Midas touch sparingly throughout the house – rather than grouping the whole stash – unless it is a cabinet of gilded wine glasses. This especially goes for brass pieces – think classy, not brassy.

Position away from the glaring sunlight however, you can afford to be a little more brazen if there is a dark space to brighten. Paint with a gold shimmer can be used creatively for walls and cornices to cupboards and knobs.

Somewhere between the fluorescent headbands, shoulder-pads and roll-neck skivvies of the 80s, metallics got a bad rap. But now they’re emerging with a glamourous new look and, although head to toe may take the luster off this hot new trend, we’re here to help you find the shiny middle ground.
Accessories are the safe bet when you want to shine bright but not overwhelm. Dip your toes in the metallic waters in the more literal sense by starting with footwear, after all, a silver shoe is a pretty safe bet when it comes to putting your best foot forward.
A sweet silver clutch can take you from day to night and, and although they say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, silver has been winning some pretty illustrious affections in the jewellery department.
The future is certainly looking bright – and shiny.
