Cure your winter hair blues: GM Hair Design

Is your hair feeling dehydrated? Unloved? With split ends, or lacks lustre and you are struggling to style it? You might just need a hair detox.

GM Hair Design is your place for addressing winter hair blues, with its Hair Detox Treatment offer to address 25 different hair issues.

For just $120, it lasts up to 32 shampoos and the paraben and sulphate free treatment uses 100 percent natural keratin, which penetrates the hair follicle to heal the hair from the inside out.

Salon co-owners Mike and Glynis Hamel say: “This miracle treatment leaves you with 80 percent less breakage, 97 percent improvement in shine, 83 percent boost in colour symmetry, and 78 percent better colour.

“It is a detangler, repairs dry damaged hair, smooths and softens, shines, is anti-humidity, colour protection, is anti-pollution, reduces split ends, strengthens fragile hair, gives volume, contains a UV filter, offers protection from thermal styling, controls moisture retention, and evens porous hair.

“It is anti-static, restores lustre, makes blow drying faster and easier, improves elasticity, seals the cuticle, is paraben free, sulphate free, cruelty free, and is altogether an advanced and light weight treatment.”

If you can’t make it to the salon, try GM’s own Christchurch-made environmentally friendly products, Mike’s Hair Care.

Wet hair and apply MHC Conditioner to mid lengths and ends of hair and leave in; rinse out with MHC Shampoo; apply MHC conditioner; rinse out and towel dry; apply MHC styling products.

Getting the cut

Creating fantastic, stylish results, while keeping prices affordable, is always the goal at local salon, Haircuts for Haircuts.

With two modern and contemporary stores located at Bush Inn and South City, the salon have been producing haircuts for everyone from preschoolers to pensioners – and all ages in between – for more than 30 years.

Owner and operator Michelle Butterfield says the key to such a loyal customer base is the friendly and experienced staff, who are all fully qualified hair stylists, some who have worked with the company for more than 20 years!

“Haircuts for Haircuts is a long-established cutting bar that has continued to provide professional, affordable haircuts for men, women and children, while also delivering an efficient and friendly service in a welcoming environment,” Michelle says.

Open seven days a week, no appointment is necessary at either branch, however clients can opt to wait for their preferred stylist.

Aiming to always keep prices reasonable, the ever-popular Clipper Cut is still available for just $13.

The team also offers a loyalty system with every eighth haircut free, as well as pensioner and student discounts.

“We want every client to leave the salon happy with their haircut and we always keep up-to-date with the latest trends and styles. It’s about offering haircuts at an affordable price, while delivering a fantastic result for the entire family.”

Salon Parlour

A creative collective: Salon Parlour

Walk into Salon Parlour on the corner of Westminster and Cranford Streets and it’s buzzing. It looks like any other high end salon; the hairdressers are busy and motivated and it is a vibrant and beautiful space.

However, there is a key difference; these stylists are working in their own businesses, mentored and assisted by Salon Parlour co-owners Susie Chisnall and Becs Taulango. The stylists rent a chair and are responsible for their own clients and for developing their own business, with the benefit of lots of support from Susie and Becs.

With 30 years of experience in the hair and beauty industry between them, this talented duo knows how best to help the contracting stylists. “It takes a fair bit of confidence to go out on your own,” Becs says. “And there is more to it than just being a good stylist. We help them with advice about business management and marketing, and eventually they are well-prepared to take that next step.”
Susie believes the support from the salon and the shared vision make for a co-operative and pleasant team environment where stylists benefit, not only from Becs’ and Susie’s support, but also from each other’s different experiences, and from the group of experts the salon can call on for specific training and advice should it be needed.

They have great brand support from their haircare partner MATRIX and are the first (and only) R.A.W Concept Salon in NZ.
Currently there are opportunities for two hairdressing professionals to join the team.

Earth Organic Hairdressing

Eco-styling: Earth Organic Hairdressing aims to keep hair AND the planet beautiful

Creating beautiful hair in a vibrant, welcoming oasis on High Street, Earth Organic Hairdressing is an eco-friendly salon with a focus on sustainability. “Our aim was to have as small a footprint as possible,” says owner, Traci Aylmer.

From the styling stations to the skirting boards, the salon furnishings were beautifully handcrafted by Traci’s husband Ollie, using recycled timber from earthquake-damaged buildings. The carefully selected organic product ranges and hair colours consist of Angel Du Provence, De Lorenzo and Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi collection. “We wanted to keep everything authentic to the image we are creating and really care what goes into the products we use.”

Traci hired talented Kiwi artist Flox to paint the walls with stunning botanicals – an array of beautiful natural properties used in the hair products, such as lavender, ginger, aloe vera and mint.

Originally from Brighton, England, Traci has been in the industry her entire life. She fell in love with New Zealand five years ago when travelling with her family and opened Earth Organic in December last year. Through word of mouth referrals, Traci’s clientele grew so quickly she now leads a team of three to keep up with demand – two experienced senior stylists, Caitlyn and Hannah, and a talented apprentice, Alice. “My staff are wonderful and we all have a strong commitment to keeping up with the latest trends and techniques.”
