A very clever build: NKR Builders

A stunning new home at Kaiapoi’s Sovereign Palms was a recent build by NKR Builders. Situated on a corner site with commanding lake views opposite, the residence incorporates, but doesn’t integrate, a private home and a beauty salon, Specially You Beauty Therapy.

Two separate entrances lead to the house and the business. Though sharing space under the same roof as the house, the salon is a feature in itself as it has its own distinct look and feel.

Timber, stone, soft grey plasterwork and interior walls painted in earthy tones make for a harmonious, neutral theme. The house comprises three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has a generous ensuite which boasts a full-sized
stone bath with large window overlooking the garden.

High-studded ceilings add visual dimension, while a full surround-sound system built into the ceiling, plus ducted heat pumps in each room, as well as under-floor heating, deliver ultimate comfort and relaxation.

Vertical cedar finned walls (both interior and exterior) make a clever play of light and shade in the entranceway area. Overhead features, such as the entranceway’s slatted pergola and automatic roof over the outdoor dining area, are aesthetically pleasing yet practical.

The aggregate driveway, stonework chimney and feature wall make for a grand entrance, while the tiled-cut, coloured concrete patios invite year-round outdoor living.

NKR Builders owner and Managing Director, Nathan Roberts, says his clients were great to work with and the build was a seamless project.

Building firm’s new home: NKR Builders

Nathan Roberts left school and became a builder; that was nearly twenty years ago. Since then, having worked for a couple of well-established Canterbury building firms and created a partnership, he now heads his own company.

NKR Builders is an award-winning, Canterbury-based building firm. It has earned multiple Gold Awards in the Master Builder’s House of the Year competitions and won Gold Reserve for a client’s home in Southshore. Nathan’s in charge, leading two teams of qualified builders and apprentices who have been with him for the long term. Those relationships are important for the company, he says, and even more so for his clients. The experience and trust entrenched in those working connections is at the heart of the success the company enjoys.

From large farm sheds, small (or large) alterations, shop and office fitouts, and residential builds, Nathan’s focus has become high-end architecturally designed builds. That’s where he feels at home. Literally. For the past three years, he and his wife Julia have been running NKR out of their home in North Canterbury. The (until recently) office of NKR was their 2017 Master Builder’s House of the Year Gold Award ‘Builder’s Own Home’ category house in West Eyreton. From there, Nathan organised the building teams and accountant Julia managed the accounts and, as the business grew, implemented systems to make it more efficient.

In July of this year, however, NKR fitted out and moved into a newly leased space in Sydenham, which is made up of new offices, a warehouse space where some stock is maintained and a swanky new conference room where Nathan and clients can relax with a coffee and discuss making dreams come true.

It’s a display place, too. While discussing the details of your new build, you can view and choose some of the things that will feature in it; window frames and extrusions, carpet samples, drawer fronts and handles, doors and handles, weatherboard and cedar cladding profiles, lighting and light switches, joinery, paint samples, piles of brochures and literature and much more.

Lest it be a little overwhelming, Nathan is there every step of the way. Whether you have a design already drawn up, a sketch on an envelope, or just an idea in your mind, he can make it happen. From start to finish Nathan manages every aspect of the project, assuring complete satisfaction.

To celebrate the move to the new premises, Nathan and Julia recently put on a spread for the team and a few of their suppliers. They fired up the mobile BBQ from Hagley Windows and Doors, fed everybody and posed for a few photos.

Tiny build with big impact: NKR Builders

A stunning new North Canterbury home – complete with connecting airplane hangar – was made possible thanks to award-winning local company, NKR Builders.

NKR Builders

The experienced Christchurch-based team prides itself on top-quality workmanship and went to great lengths to ensure this property was finished to their precise standards. Attached to the airplane hangar, the house has its own private runway, is fully off-grid and generates all its own power from solar panels and battery storage. Built to the 75sqm limit for the secondary occupiable dwelling on a property, there’s still room to build a larger main house in the future.

Inside, they’ve thought of everything, including high-level windows for cooling down the house in summer via thermal syphon effect, and a rainwater collection tank and filtration to take care of the owner’s water needs. A wood-fired stove takes pride of place, acting as both the perfect appliance to cook up a hearty winter meal, all while heating water through a wetback system. Director Nathan Roberts describes the home as being modern with rustic flair and uses energy efficient appliances throughout. “The addition of floating shelves, a freestanding bath, a custom heatshield behind the wood-fired cooker, full-width coloured glass splash-back and stone benchtops, are just a few of the features that complement the home,” he says.

Outside, the cladding is a mix of Siberian Larch, which is oiled to give a natural feel, and textured ply and battens stained in a darker colour make the Larch and oiled grooved ply soffits really stand out. The patio area is equipped with speakers in the soffits and a clever lighting design maximises the home’s outdoor living. To top it all off, the waste water is run to a worm farm septic system – with no need for added power – so the worms take care of all the waste. This home proves they really have thought of everything.

NKR Builders

The NKR team works on a wide variety of projects, including design, project management, new builds, renovations and alterations, decks, fences and retaining walls, home repairs and maintenance, shop fit-outs, kitchen and bathroom remodels, as well as house inspections. Sustainability in mind: NKR Builders

Gold Award winners in the House Under $450,000 category of the New Zealand Master Builders House of the Year Regional Competition, NKR Builders believes ‘South New Brighton Project’ is a great representation of the company’s building philosophy: ‘To provide the highest quality workmanship to clients and bring their dreams to reality’.

NKR Builders

NKR Builders Director Nathan Roberts says the home stands out as a statement of design and meticulous planning. Exterior cladding combines vertical cedar weatherboards with Shadowclad (textured ply, oiled) and chunky cover battens. The interiors feature plywood ceilings with exposed rafters in the living areas, and timber floors. High ceilings leverage airiness and space on the 115sqm footprint. The look and feel of comfort is enhanced by the modern ultra-low emission burner.

However, this home is about so much more than its fabulous style. It is designed with sustainability in mind – to reduce the overall environmental impact during and after construction. Locally sourced materials with a carbon zero footprint, along with increased R rated insulation provide a foundation of energy efficiency.

Insulated exterior doors, thermally broken aluminum extrusion windows with double glazing and tinted glass are joined by thermosiphon design incorporating high level automated windows, allowing heat exchange throughout the house via natural convection which further increases energy efficiency.

NKR Builders

Solar energy heats the water and provision for future expansion is built in. The house’s carbon footprint has been carefully considered, down to using LED lighting throughout the property. A full grey water and storm water system is incorporated, releasing the homeowners from any dependency on climate or rainfall.

Nathan says the challenge came with the new flood level provisions; the floor is 1.2m above the ground, yet the house had to be proportionally in harmony with those around it.

For Nathan and his team, it’s a very satisfying build with a great result. “The materials really complement each other, especially the cedar soffits against the dark oiled shadow clad, and it is so great that the client wanted to build something out of the ordinary, as they are the jobs that stand out.”
