“Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.” – Barbara Kingsolver

It was 14 years ago when I truly got to appreciate the sentiment behind Mother’s Day after a lifetime of celebrating them. Because, although I have always had a mother, it was not long before Mother’s Day in 2005 that I became one.

I’m not sure to this day if anything can truly prepare you for motherhood and all that encompasses. The overwhelmingly love that would drive one to give the figurative and literal shirt off your back if it was needed is not something easily captured in words. Family – both as a whole and in its separate parts – comes in all shapes and sizes, mothers included. So whether you are a mother, a mother figure, a dad raising children alone, you’re a foster mum, you have adopted or had a whāngai arrangement, this day is for you.

Although for many of us, this special day is about chocolate, flowers, cards and breakfast in bed, the second Sunday in May is equally about honouring your role in the lives of those who depend on you; it is the one day in the year when children, young and old, do their best to demonstrate in a tangible way just how much their mums mean to them. After all, mothers are said to hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.

Mother’s Day Macarons Recipe

Yields 35

140g ground almonds
2 cups icing sugar
4 egg whites, at room temperature
4 tablespoons caster sugar
Food colour of choice

150g white chocolate, broken in pieces
4 tablespoons cream
4 tablespoons icing sugar
1-2 tablespoons clever flavouring and colour combos

  1. Line oven trays with baking paper marked with well-spaced 3cm circles. Process almonds with icing sugar then sift into a bowl. Beat egg whites to soft peaks. Gradually add caster sugar and beat for about 5 minutes. Add food colour.
  2. Mix almond mixture into egg whites. Place about half the mixture in a piping bag fitted with a 1cm nozzle. Pipe tight small rounds into each marked circle. Lightly tap trays on bench then leave macarons to dry at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 170°C. Bake until dry, then turn heat to 140°C, place trays in oven and bake for 18-20 minutes. Carefully slide baking paper onto a damp benchtop. Cool macarons slightly then transfer to a wire rack.
  3. Microwave chocolate and cream on high for 1 minute. Mix well to melt chocolate then stir in icing sugar and flavouring or colour if using. Chill until thickened. Pipe mixture onto half the shells then sandwich together with remaining shells. Refrigerate in a covered container for at least an hour, overnight if possible. Master the recipe then get creative with colours and flavours.

A Run With Heart

Ashburton’s Lake Hood is the picturesque location for a run with heart – both figuratively and literally.

One of several events across New Zealand supporting the Heart Foundation, the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/Walk returns this year on Sunday 12 May 2019! Heart disease is New Zealand’s single biggest killer, claiming the lives of one New Zealander every 90 minutes. The fact that this event corresponds with Mother’s Day is not lost on organisers, with heart disease claiming the lives of more than 3000 women every year.

Jennian Homes has been a loyal supporter of the Heart Foundation for almost a decade, in the fight to stop all people in New Zealand dying prematurely from heart disease and to enable those with heart disease to live full lives.
Now in its eighth year, the run is offering families across the country the chance to have fun on Mother’s Day, get active and support the Heart Foundation along the way. The event will start at 9am on Sunday 12 May and entries include a free t-shirt for each attendee (sizes available will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and while stocks last).

Editor’s Perspective: on being a mum and Mother’s Day

“Children are not a distraction from the most important work, they are the most important work,” CS Lewis.

Metropol Editor Melinda Collins
Metropol Editor Melinda Collins

There’s unpaid overtime – with back to back early and late shifts a given – unexpected expenses come with no reimbursement, public holidays aren’t recognised and, for that matter, neither are weekends. There’s no performance reviews, no opportunity for a payrise – in fact, there’s no pay at all.
Chances are, if it was employment, you would have called in the mediators and the union would be threatening a strike.
Although motherhood is one of the most remanding roles many of us will ever undertake, in the same breath, it is also one of the most rewarding.
While at face value Mother’s Day represents an annual opportunity to thank our mums for all their tireless dedication, it’s also a great opportunity for mums to take a step back and see themselves from their children’s perspectives.
When those little eyes look up at you, they see perfection. When those little hands reach out to hold you, they see your strength. In this one little person’s eyes, heart and mind, you are their world.
Although motherhood can be a thankless task a lot of the time and time to reflect is a luxury many simply don’t have, to those small humans you are enough, you are important and you are worthy.
To all the mums – and mums to be – out there, happy Mother’s Day from the Metropol team. Job well done.
