Sip away in style

High tea is the perfect way to spend an afternoon, whether it’s a special occasion or a family event. Taking time out to indulge in the timeless art of catching up over tea (or bubbles!) and fancy treats served at your table is an increasingly popular option, despite its ‘old-fashioned’ origins.

Crowne Plaza – September 2018

WIN: To celebrate the upcoming Showbiz Christchurch production of My Fair Lady 3-18 April, Metropol has two individual prize packages to give away, both include a sumptuous high tea for two people at Crowne Plaza Christchurch and tickets for a matinee of My Fair Lady at 4pm, Sunday 13 April, Isaac Theatre Royal. These packages are valued at $200 each.

To enter, head to the post on the Metropol Facebook page and simply tag your ‘plus one’. Winners drawn 26 March.

Overlooking Victoria Square, Market Place Restaurant at Crowne Plaza provides the perfect setting to sip away the afternoon – pairing premium loose leaf T2 tea and expertly brewed Vittoria coffee (or Te Hana Reserve bubbles) with three tiers of sweet and savoury delicacies.

Highlights of the menu include freshly baked scones, assorted macarons and mini sandwiches, amongst other high tea classics.

Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available on request.

Since opening in 2017, Market Place has been a popular spot for social events and celebrations over high tea and the venue also hosts a lavish Mother’s Day event which continues to sell out every year.

Executive Chef, Hamish Watt, attributes the popularity of Crowne Plaza’s high tea to the freshly baked scones.

“We use fresh whipped cream in our scone mix which makes them more golden and buttery”.

High tea at Market Place is also the perfect accompaniment to the highly anticipated Showbiz Christchurch production of My Fair Lady opening 3 April.

An early afternoon high tea sets the scene perfectly for the 4pm matinees on 5, 12 and 13 April, with Crowne Plaza Christchurch just a short walk from the Isaac Theatre Royal.

Seven Café is a relaxing retreat in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Church Corner. With plenty of parking and a pretty, sequestered interior, it is a nice alternative to the frantic atmosphere of the mall.

On the menu at Seven is a tempting array of brunch items including smashed avocado, the café’s famous eggs benedict, and the even more popular Sticky Pork Sandwich – slow roasted pork belly with bacon, hashbrown, brie, lettuce and a homemade apple chutney. It’s also served with fries.

The staff are really friendly, in keeping with the casual but efficient style of the eatery. It is open seven days a week, is fully licensed, and has a diverse menu to suit everyone, including a children’s menu and toys to entertain the little ones.

Gift vouchers are available so you can give the experience to someone to enjoy, you can text your coffee order for convenience (see the website www.sevencafe.co.nz). All the food is sourced fresh and caters to various dietary requirements. There are also catering, and private function facilities.

The High Tea at Seven is very popular. Whether a baby shower, a significant birthday, hen’s do, or a quiet celebration, it is served daily at 2:30. Club sandwiches, quiche, scones, chicken wraps, and other delights served with the choice of tea, coffee or juice.  A booking is essential, and all the information you need is on the website. Pink Ribbon High Tea at The george

High tea temptations: stick your pinkies out for the Pink Ribbon high teas at The George

The new Executive Chef of The George, Antony Page, recently filled us in on the new 50 Bistro winter menu heading our way, when the discussion moved to a charity function that runs close to Metropol’s heart – the Pink Ribbon Breakfast, supporting the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.

Pink Ribbon High Tea at The george

The George is getting behind this very worthy cause by throwing a Pink Ribbon High Tea until 15 June. Now you’ll be able to have the opportunity to enjoy something as decadent and delicious as a high tea at The George, while supporting research into breast cancer, with the goal of getting zero deaths from the disease.
You can start your High Tea with a Nautilus Rosé, or tea and coffee. Culinary options on offer include chicken, cranberry and brie sandwiches, carpaccio of beef and horseradish, and smoked salmon and herb cream cheese rolls. Or perhaps you’ll be tempted by the sweet treats like raspberry macaroons, strawberry custard tart or cherry chocolate brownie.
The choices on the menu are extensive yet, with one of Canterbury’s top chefs, Kelly Te Mete, behind the menu design, how could it possibly be anything but stunning? Why not get your BFFs together and make a date from mid-morning till late afternoon by calling The George to book your table?
Any time is a good time for that convivial catch up with the ladies over high tea when you can join with the George in supporting the wonderful endeavour that is the Pink Ribbon Breakfast.

Seven Cafe

A cool cafe vibe: a visit to Riccarton’s popular Seven Cafe

The atmosphere in Seven Café at 11am is warm and welcoming. “This is coffee time and people really enjoy getting together for a chat,” says Vivi Xu, café owner.

Seven Cafe

As one customer is about to leave the café she remarks, “I especially like the vibe here. Do you cater for private functions? I have been looking for somewhere casual and not too big for my daughter’s 21st birthday celebration.”
She has come to the right place. Seven Café is very popular for 21st birthdays – or any birthday bash for that matter. It’s perfect too for corporate functions, engagement parties, baby showers or hens’ parties. From 5pm onwards, the café transforms into a function space for the exclusive use of the customer who has booked it.
“We have room for up to 50 guests,” Vivi says. “Our usual liquor licence is until 11pm, but we can assist customers to apply for an extended licence if that is what they require. In keeping with the informal theme for which we are known, we provide platters with all different kinds of finger foods – meats and cheeses, savoury items and sweet treats. People can simply help themselves.”
But Seven Café offers more than the inside of the café itself. Its outdoor marquee and courtyard can be booked for groups of 10-30 during the usual opening hours. It’s a unique meeting space ideal for breakfast, working lunches and meetings – and of course the café’s famous and much sought-after ‘High Tea’.
