There’s plenty to discover at vintage store Dusty Old Things, who have recently settled into a bright new location on Wairakei Road.
The larger venue means they can stock even more spectacular finds from jewellery to tools and everything in between.
Owner Glenis Parker wants to thank all her new and existing customers for their support during the transition, but it’s still business as usual. “We’re selling a vast range of items,” she says. “Vintage jewellery, clothing, linen, pottery, glassware, collectables, and furniture from all eras.
“A dedicated clothing room also includes hats and fascinators which are great for that ‘one-of-a-kind, individual look for any occasion.’”
Top-selling items are the vintage and retro lights (more arriving late September), home and furniture accessories, and realistic artificial flowers that brighten up any room.
With plentiful parking, popping into the shop at 526 Wairakei Road is easy – you never know what purchases you’ll discover to take home.
If you’ve visited Waikari recently, you’ll know Pam’s Café & Gifts is the perfect place to stop for quality food and a great coffee. What makes it even better is the range of unique giftware on display offering something for everyone.
In the two years it has been at its current location, locals and visitors alike have been making the shop their first port of call when they’re in the Canterbury town.
Owner Pam Burrows says the secret lies in their range of quality homestyle food and Hummingbird coffee. Currently, the most popular items on the menu are the decadent carrot cake and date loaf, which are made on-site, using all-natural ingredients, and taste “just like grandma used to make”.
There is also an extensive breakfast and lunch menu available, and the scones, pies and afghan cookies all receive rave reviews.
If the sun is shining, guests can make the most of the outdoor seating, or stay indoors enjoying the warmth of the conservatory.
In the gift shop, you’ll find homemade jam, baby wear, women’s ponchos, manuka products, toys, cards, quirky signs and more.
Pam has recently introduced a mobile coffee cart to the business, which is now available for events. From Thursday through to Sunday, the café is also open late serving fish and chips.
Next time you’re passing through Waikari, make sure Pam’s Café & Gifts is your first stop on the journey. For more information, phone 03 314 4644.

Recovering from the adrenalin adventures Hanmer Springs is known for has never been as easy or as relaxing as it has been since Mickey Raes burst open its doors in this winter wonderland.
It’s been a year since Wendy Lamont took her formerly home-based business to the next level, with a beautiful store in Hanmer Springs’ Boulder Point Precinct. “It’s taken off so much more than I had ever hoped,” Wendy says. “Without sounding cliché, we really are a one stop shop for crafts and giftware, with something here for everyone.”
Mickey Raes is nestled comfortably in the figurative and literal heart of Hanmer, opposite the duck pond and, with Boulder Point Precinct’s exceptional spread of businesses offering everything from coffee and a bite to eat, to gourmet burgers and beautiful Scandinavian clothing, it’s the ultimate spot to spend a recovery day off the slopes.
Crafts such as knitting, crochet, sewing and quilting have been experiencing a serious resurgence and Mickey Raes stocks a full range of craft, sewing and knitting supplies, fabrics and haberdashery. Craft kits, including the popular Diamond Dotz, provide everything you need for some clever projects to keep you busy and there’s a range of books to teach you what you need to know. Better yet, you can whip up some winter warmers with the large supply of wool you can find here.
“It’s a great opportunity to try out some new crafts and activities without spending too much and winter is the best time to give them all a go!” True to Wendy’s history as a wedding accessory supplier, she stocks all those handy last minute extras that might be needed on the day, “such as bridal horse shoes, car ribbons and the emergency veil,” she laughs.
It’s a great stop for giftware, including christenings and 21st presents and Wendy even makes custom made Christmas stockings. There’s a carefully curated range of eco-friendly products, including pet beds made from recycled bottle fibre. “We’re celebrating being open a year and it has been an amazing year. I’m thankful to all the wonderful customers who have supported me over the past year.”

Forget the toasters and towels; giving glamour is the way to go when it comes to engagement and wedding presents! Even those starting married life on the most stringent of budgets need some sort of glamour in their lives. The bare necessities don’t always cut it when it comes to presents.
The renaissance of house plants as an essential part of the interior home décor scene makes a living present easy, and healthy. We know now what great air cleaners houseplants make. The spectacular phalaenopsis orchids are one of the most popular houseplants. Their flowers last four months and they come with care sheets to ensure success. Peace lilies are the most popular foliage plants with striking glossy bold leaves and the bonus of pure white flowers and with one of the strongest air-cleaning abilities of all. The contemporary foliage on both the fiddle leaf figs and the trendy monsteras make them some of the current easy-care favourites.
The key to turning beautiful houseplants into glamour wedding presents is using great containers to add the finishing touch; the strong trend in houseplants has encouraged a much wider choice in the ‘cover pot’ range, from ceramics to baskets to hand-finished aluminium. Add a stylish pot, have it gift-wrapped and hey presto, you have the complete present with minimum fuss. So real you won’t believe they’re not real! Not sure if the happy receivers of the living, breathing present will be committed to houseplant care? Then check out the artificial options because these days they’re so realistic only an expert can tell the difference and the artificial range opens up the possibility of having a big show-stopping vase of flowers or foliage all year round.
Less is definitely more when it comes to making an impact with flowers, so choose less varieties – or better still, just one – and use good numbers to get the best effect. The most effective and most popular varieties are peonies, hydrangeas, magnolias in flower and bud, roses and sweet peas. Once again the arrangement is set off to perfection with the right vase or container and, with using the artificial flower option, a waterproof container isn’t necessary so the world’s your oyster. Baskets, funky tins, cardboard, aluminium, unglazed ceramics and glass all make good containers.
When it comes to glamour there’s plenty in the homewares department to make an engagement or wedding present easy, from the more classic to the latest in contemporary décor. Hand-finished, lightly burnished aluminium ware works with just about any décor style and is one of the most popular timeless wedding present lines – champagne buckets, salad bowls, candelabra, trays etc. Glass is another easy winner, from cut-glass vases to cocktail glasses to decanters, to wine glasses. The small, round, hand-forged black iron folding occasional tables fit in with any style and are super useful – they’ve been around for years but are always popular.
Find all this and more at the city’s literal and figurative oasis, Terra Viva Home & Garden on the corner of Wairakei Road and Roydvale Avenue or visit www.terraviva.co.nz.
