Taming tummies, refining rears and thinning thighs for more than one million people worldwide, the Cooltech process of freezing fat has arrived in Christchurch and is exclusively available at Encorė Cosmetic Clinic. Owner Dr Grant Bellaney says if you start your treatment now, you’ll see results in time for your summer holiday.
Cooltech is European technology and comes with a larger range of adapters than other brands, meaning a more extensive range of body areas, including those with curved contours, can be treated. Available in 40 countries, the fat cooling process is hugely popular and is fast becoming the go-to treatment for spot reduction of fat in New Zealand. Cooltech freezes the fat cells which then break down and are expelled through the natural metabolic process.
While Encorė Cosmetic Clinic offers the full range of cosmetic treatments, it does have a special focus on fat reduction. As well as Cooltech, Encorė also offers the more traditional tumescent liposuction and non-invasive fat reduction using heating with their TriLipo technology. TriLipo combined with Cooltech is known as the ‘fire and ice’ treatment. Encorė is the only clinic in Christchurch equipped to offer all three treatment options.
The team at Encorė can advise clients on the best option or combination of options and client preference is the first consideration: the experienced team understands that for some people, liposuction is not their prefered choice. The Cooltech process, or freezing of fat, can remove fat in specific stubborn pockets and is the clinic’s preferred non-invasive fat reduction treatment, as it has a higher patient satisfaction rate than TriLipo.
At Encorė, aesthetic registered nurses can treat clients with Cooltech Monday to Friday. Treatments last around 70 minutes. Two adaptors can be used simultaneously, reducing treatment time. Most clients need 1-2 treatments 8-12 weeks apart. For most, one treatment is enough. Results are visible in 6-8 weeks, with a 95 percent satisfaction rate globally. Cooltech treatments are not painful but tingling or heat at the treatment points is possible and you can feel the vacuum pressure of the adaptors. Post-treatment, possible localised redness could take a few hours to subside.
Short term side effects such as altered sensation or discomfort can occur. Find Encorė Cosmetic Clinic www.encorehealth.co.nz and 248 Papanui Road in Merivale Village where off-street parking is available.

KM Surgical has cemented its position as the top tier provider of cosmetic, appearance and skin medicine.
Now located at Avenue Health 202 Bealey Ave, an experienced specialist and nursing team offer a hospital level facility for surgeries, with theatres at top specification, and day-stay surgery accreditation. KM Surgical has a surgical focus on advanced level local anaesthetic procedures rather than general anaesthesia. These procedures are safe with quick recovery. “We focus on achieving natural results with facial rejuvenation, liposuction and laser resurfacing,” Dermatologist and Director Doctor Ken Macdonald says. KM Surgical offers a Vertical Vector Facelift (MACS lift), which is very effective at correcting sagging facial tissue, such as jowls, neck and cheeks. It works by tightening tissues under the skin.
“For good results you have to tighten tissues under the skin,” he says. Upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation is a popular option also, and severe sun damage can be treated with laser resurfacing. KM Surgical also offers a full range of appearance medicine treatments, such as injectables and thread lifting. The laser suite caters for an extensive range of options: veins, nails, tattoos and scars.
KM Surgical also has expertise in body contouring with tumescent liposuction, which remains the definitive treatment for fat removal, and it can be combined with augmentation via fat transfer to face, buttocks, breasts and scars.
Dr Macdonald says they have been building the cosmetic practice for 15 years, but the field is always advancing, and the team ensures it is at the forefront of new approaches and technology. Treatments can usually be scheduled within a month of the initial consultation, but the team strongly encourages clients to discuss options thoroughly, think carefully and obtain sound advice before they go ahead with elective surgical procedures.
With KM Surgical having its own facility, the procedures are cost effective and finance is available. “We do not advise overseas cosmetic surgeries which are high risk.”
Although a large bra size can be portrayed as desirable, the reality for many women is that large breasts can cause physical and emotional discomfort. Carrying the extra weight can result in back, neck or shoulder pain and can limit physical activities.
Some women also experience feelings of self-consciousness and struggle to find well-fitting clothes.
The good news is Dr Grant Bellaney, founder of the Encore Cosmetic Clinic, offers women an alternative to traditional breast reduction surgery, with extremely good results.
“Most breasts consist of 40 to 60 percent fat, so the removal of some of that fat through a procedure called tumescent liposuction can give a significant reduction in breast size,” he says. While traditional breast reduction surgery is carried out by plastic or general surgeons, breast reduction procedures using tumescent liposuction have been developed and practised by dermatological surgeons such as Bellaney, who are skin and fat specialists. The procedure is suitable for all ages, particularly those over the age of 35. It was first used in the 1980s and has an outstanding safety record, he adds.
“The procedure also has huge advantages over traditional surgery. It is safer because it is performed under local anaesthetic, which has fewer risks than surgery that is carried out under general anaesthetic. It is also simpler and less painful than surgery and the recovery time is far quicker. “There are also fewer side effects and less scaring. With traditional surgery all patients will have visable scaring of some degree, whereas little or no visable scaring is present with this technique. With traditional surgury about 10 to 15 percent of patients can experience a loss of sensitivity in the nipples or an inability to breastfeed afterwards. With tumescent liposuction, the risk reduces to less than one percent.”
Dr Bellaney was the first specialist to introduce tumescent liposuction to the South Island and has continued to develop and refine the procedure ever since. “These incisions are virtually scarless and heal very quickly, usually without needing sutures. It’s a day procedure, so women can go home afterwards and are usually back to their regular routine within a few days.”
Dr Bellaney has successfully performed this procedure on hundreds of women over the last 10 years.

Many Cantabrians have said that central cities come to life with essential services placed in top locations. That’s now happening. One great example is the new Unichem Cashel Pharmacy, right opposite Ballantynes.
This year the retail heart of Christchurch is back to teeming with life. Cashel Mall, BNZ Square, and The Crossing have everything city dwellers want or need during lunch breaks. Plus, a visit to the Unichem Cashel Pharmacy holds more time-saving value than ever before. It now offers medical aesthetic services, so people can boost their wellbeing on the fly.
Not only for collecting your prescriptions, the pharmacy – which also boasts a Post Shop – offers booked appointments with a registered nurse. Flu jabs are administered here, as are initial complementary skin consultations. These then can lead onto service-oriented appearance medicine, such as dermal fillers, collagen-inducing needling, or simply a spot of nutritional counselling.
This is a no-nonsense, caring place where health, nutrition, beauty and cosmetic medicine align within a highly medically-regulated pharmacy setting.
All consultations and treatments happen in confidential, private surroundings, with intensively trained, experienced registered nurses. Pharmacist owner Annabel Turley has introduced this service three days a week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Cosmetic medicine treatments such as botox and dysport injections are administered in a private room and clients’ initial consultation includes a full assessment of a client’s skin requirements, and his or her overall lifestyle and health.
Aging naturally, yet gracefully is something we all aspire to achieve. Registered Cosmetic Nurse, Louise Highet will help you achieve both skin health and skin beauty.
From a nursing career which has included both hospital and primary health care, Louise then pursued the field of dermatology and cosmetic medicine. Optimising skin health and confidence quickly became her passion.
As a result, Louise now offers her wealth of knowledge and over five years’ experience of cosmetic medical injectables and other advanced aesthetic procedures. Safety and education is her top client priority and she personalises each client’s treatment plan accordingly, from her upstairs, boutique premises in High Street.
Louise sees many clients who all seek hydrated, youthful and glowing skin. Some of this, she says, is an inside job, requiring hydration, adequate sleep and nutrients; Louise takes a holistic approach to skin health and beauty.
Louise aims to leave her customers walking away feeling and looking refreshed, natural and well rested, with results that last over time. Providing a range of non-surgical treatments of dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, clinical grade skin-care and peels, along with sophisticated platelet-rich plasma and dermal needling treatments.
Not believing in administering skin interventions in isolation, Louise realises that educating clients throughout their aesthetic journey is key. She shares her top recommendations on keeping your skin in a beautiful state of health, leaving you feeling refreshed, and confident. Visit louisehighet.co.nz.

At last, the long awaited non-surgical approach to reducing double chins has been approved for use in New Zealand and now administered in Christchurch by Face Value Cosmetic Medical Clinic’s Dr Philip Frost.
“I am delighted to be one of first doctors in New Zealand trained to offer this treatment,” Dr Frost says. “It has undergone extensive clinical trials and is a safe and effective non-surgical approach to the very common problem of sub-mental fat, or double chin”
Sometimes, no matter how much you diet or exercise, the fullness in this area just will not go away. Belkyra® is a prescription only medicine which, when injected below the chin, breaks down fat, resulting in a more contoured neck profile and jawline.
The double chin injections feature a product which contains deoxycholic acid, which is found naturally in the body and helps absorb fat in food. The product is injected into the fat in the double chin area and permanently destroys the fat cells by a process known as adipocytolysis. Once the fat cells have been destroyed they cannot accumulate and store fat again.
Imagine your fat cells are balloons and double chin injections are darts. Injecting the product under the chin is like throwing a dart at fat cells. Once they have been popped they cannot be blown up again. Clients need between two and six treatments spaced four to eight weeks apart.
The New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine (NZSCM) recommends this treatment is administered only by doctors, reflecting international best practice.
